“I think this is the one that will finally make the difference.”
Chloe said it lightly, but there was something underneath it. Hope and a quiet kind of exhaustion.
Over the years, she has done what many mid-career women do. She consistently invested in herself.
Thoughtfully choosing courses, and certifications that would strengthen her career
Because if she just became more qualified, then surely the next opportunity will come.
But as I listened, I found myself wondering…
What if Chloe isn’t stuck because she needs to learn more?
What if she is stuck because she is solving the wrong problem?
Because at this stage, progression is rarely about adding more knowledge.
It is about how that capability is:
• seen
• understood
• and spoken about in the rooms she is not in
And that requires something different.
Not more effort but a shift.
A shift from building quietly to being visible.
A shift from hoping to be recognized to being clearly positioned.
A shift from doing more to ensuring the right people understand the impact of what is already being done.
And yes, that shift often leads to different conversations.
But the conversation is not the starting point.
The realization is.
At 3 a.m., the question is rarely:
“What should I learn next?”
It is:
“What’s holding me back?”
Sometimes, clarity doesn’t come from doing more it comes from seeing differently.
